BIOPOLIO is a Bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine (bOPV) manufactured by Bharat Biotech, containing live attenuated poliovirus Type 1 and Type 3 (Sabin strains). It is given as 2 oral drops and forms a core part of India's Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) and the nationwide Pulse Polio (National Immunization Day) campaign that helped India become polio-free in 2014.

What Disease Does BIOPOLIO Protect Against?

BIOPOLIO protects against Poliomyelitis (Polio), a highly infectious viral disease caused by poliovirus (Type 1 and Type 3) that spreads mainly through the fecal-oral route (contaminated water/food) and invades the nervous system. It can cause irreversible paralysis within hours, most commonly in children under 5 years, and in rare cases can be fatal when breathing muscles are affected.

🦵

Irreversible Paralysis

Poliovirus can invade the spinal cord and cause permanent limb paralysis, most often in the legs, within hours of infection.

👶

Children Most at Risk

Children under 5 years are most susceptible; the virus spreads easily in areas with poor sanitation.

🌍

India Polio-Free Since 2014

Sustained OPV + IPV vaccination and Pulse Polio drives helped India achieve WHO polio-free certification in March 2014.

🛡️

Herd Immunity Matters

Continued vaccination of every child prevents re-importation of poliovirus from endemic regions and protects the whole community.

Who Should Get BIOPOLIO?

👶

All Infants (UIP)

Every infant as per India's Universal Immunization Programme – birth dose plus doses with each Pentavalent shot.

💉

Children Under 5 (Pulse Polio)

All children under 5 years during National/Sub-National Immunization Days, regardless of prior vaccination status.

✈️

Travellers to Endemic Countries

Travellers to/from polio-endemic or re-infected countries may need an additional dose and an International Certificate of Vaccination.

How Is BIOPOLIO Given?

1

Simple Oral Drops

2 drops are placed directly into the child's mouth using the dropper/vial – no injection, no needle, no pain.

2

Can Be Combined

Given at the same visit as Pentavalent, Rotavirus and other UIP/IAP schedule vaccines.

3

Spit-Up Rule

If the child spits out or vomits the dose within a few minutes, a repeat dose can be given at the same visit.

4

Post-Dose Observation

Our certified nurse observes the child for 30 minutes after the dose for any immediate reaction.

Possible Side Effects

Common (Mild)
Usually none. Occasionally mild fever or loose stools for 1–2 days after the dose.
Rare
Vaccine-Associated Paralytic Polio (VAPP) – extremely rare (estimated 1 in a few million doses), which is why India uses combined OPV + IPV schedules for extra safety.

Precautions & Contraindications

Do NOT give BIOPOLIO if the child has:

  • Severe vomiting or diarrhoea at the time of the scheduled dose (defer until recovered)
  • A known severe immunodeficiency disorder (e.g., SCID) – use IPV instead, consult a paediatrician
  • A household contact who is immunocompromised (discuss with your doctor)
  • A known severe allergic reaction to a previous dose
⚠️ Always inform your paediatrician or the visiting nurse about the child's current health status, immune conditions, and any medications before vaccination.
