What is Typhoid and Why Vaccinate?
🌡
Typhoid Fever
A life-threatening systemic infection caused by Salmonella typhi. Spreads via contaminated food and water. Causes sustained high fever, severe headache, abdominal pain and can progress to intestinal perforation or sepsis if untreated.
🇮🇳
India's High Burden
India reports an estimated 4-6 million typhoid cases per year. Delhi NCR, Noida and Ghaziabad are high-risk zones due to population density and variable sanitation. Children aged 2-15 bear the highest burden.
💊
Drug Resistance (XDR Typhoid)
Extensively Drug-Resistant (XDR) typhoid resistant to multiple antibiotics is spreading rapidly. Vaccination with TCV is now the most reliable and cost-effective prevention strategy against even drug-resistant strains.
🛡️
Why TCV is the Gold Standard
Conjugate technology (Vi + Tetanus Toxoid) generates T-cell memory - protection from 6 months, longer duration, booster effect on re-exposure. WHO recommends TCV over plain polysaccharide vaccines globally.
Who Should Get Enteroshield 0.5?
👶
Infants from 6 Months
Enteroshield can be given from 6 months of age - unlike older typhoid vaccines limited to 2 years+. IAP recommends first dose at 9-12 months for routine vaccination.
👧👦
Children 1-15 Years
Highest-risk age group for typhoid in India. Single dose provides strong protection. Booster at 2 years if primary dose was given before 2nd birthday.
✈️
Pre-Travel Vaccination
Travelling to typhoid-endemic areas - South Asia, Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa. Book Enteroshield at home 2 or more weeks before departure with VacciHub.
👨💼
Adults in High-Risk Areas
Adults in Delhi NCR with unreliable water supply, food handlers, sanitation workers and healthcare staff dealing with enteric fever cases.
🔬
Microbiology Lab Workers
Occupational exposure to Salmonella typhi. Typhoid vaccination is recommended in microbiology and reference laboratories per occupational health guidelines.
🏥
Immunocompromised Individuals
HIV-positive, transplant patients and those on immunosuppressive therapy face higher typhoid risk. Consult your doctor - TCV is generally recommended with appropriate caution.

Same core formulation as Typbar TCV. Enteroshield uses the identical active ingredient - Vi polysaccharide (25 μg) conjugated to Tetanus Toxoid (25 μg) - as Bharat Biotech's own Typbar TCV brand. The difference is branding and marketing partner (Abbott India for Enteroshield vs Bharat Biotech directly for Typbar TCV).
Storage critical: Store at +2C to +8C. Do NOT freeze - discard if frozen. Shake well before use. VacciHub nurses carry Enteroshield in validated cold boxes and verify the Vaccine Vial Monitor indicator before every dose.

How Does Enteroshield Work?
1
Vi-Tetanus Toxoid Conjugate Injected IM
The 0.5 mL PFS delivers purified Vi polysaccharide (25 μg) covalently conjugated to Tetanus Toxoid (25 μg). Administered deep intramuscularly - deltoid in adults/older children, anterolateral thigh in infants.
2
T-Cell Help via Tetanus Toxoid Carrier
The Tetanus Toxoid carrier protein presents the Vi polysaccharide to T-helper cells, converting the immune response from T-independent to T-dependent. This is the critical difference - plain Vi polysaccharide vaccines cannot engage T-cells and thus generate no immunological memory.
3
High-Titre Anti-Vi IgG Antibodies and Memory
The immune system generates robust IgG antibodies against Vi capsular polysaccharide - these coat S. typhi bacteria and enable complement-mediated killing and phagocytosis. Long-lived memory B and T-cells are simultaneously created.
4
Effective from 6 Months - Lasts Years
Protection develops in about 2 weeks. Conjugate technology enables effective vaccination from 6 months - when plain polysaccharide vaccines are completely ineffective. Booster recommended every 3 years for high-risk individuals.
Enteroshield Side Effects

Enteroshield is simply Bharat Biotech's TCV platform marketed through Abbott India's distribution network. Your doctor or VacciHub nurse can advise on availability.
Precautions and Contraindications
Do NOT give Enteroshield if:
Known hypersensitivity to any component, including Tetanus Toxoid
Severe allergic reaction to a prior TCV or Vi vaccine dose
Acute febrile illness on vaccination day - defer until recovery
Use with Caution:
Immunosuppressed individuals - immune response may be reduced; still recommended
Pregnancy - consult doctor; benefit generally outweighs risk for endemic area residents or travellers
Recent Tetanus Toxoid-containing vaccine - discuss timing with doctor
Thrombocytopenia or coagulation disorders - injection-site bleeding risk
Never freeze. Freezing irreversibly destroys Enteroshield's efficacy. Check the Vaccine Vial Monitor before use - VacciHub nurses are trained on cold chain verification at every home visit.
