๐Ÿ‘ฅ Who Should Get Hexaxim (Hexavalent Vaccine)

Hexaxim is given as part of the routine infant immunization schedule and is especially useful for families who want to reduce the number of separate injections. It is recommended for:

๐Ÿ‘ถ

Infants Starting Primary Series

All healthy infants beginning their primary vaccination series, typically starting at 6 weeks of age, benefit from hexavalent protection against 6 diseases in one shot.

๐Ÿ“†

Catch-Up Vaccination

Children who have missed or delayed doses of DTaP, Hepatitis B, IPV or Hib vaccines can catch up efficiently using a combination hexavalent dose.

๐Ÿ‘ถ

Premature / Low Birth Weight Infants

Preterm infants can generally receive Hexaxim on the same chronological age schedule as full-term infants, as advised by their pediatrician.

๐Ÿ’‰

Parents Wanting Fewer Injections

Hexaxim combines 6 antigens into a single injection instead of 3โ€“4 separate shots, reducing visit-day distress and the number of pricks for the baby.

๐Ÿฉบ

Children Needing Hepatitis B Catch-Up

Infants who need an additional Hepatitis B dose alongside their DTaP-IPV-Hib series can receive both through Hexaxim in one visit.

๐Ÿฅ

Booster Dose at 15โ€“18 Months

Children who completed their 3-dose primary series with a hexavalent or pentavalent vaccine are due for a booster dose between 15โ€“18 months of age.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Hexaxim Composition โ€“ Per 0.5 mL Dose

โš™๏ธ How Does Hexaxim Work

1
Six Antigens Injected Intramuscularly 0.5 mL of Hexaxim is injected IM, usually into the anterolateral thigh in infants. The dose contains inactivated/detoxified components of six pathogens โ€“ none of which are live, so the vaccine cannot cause the diseases it protects against.
2
Immune Recognition and Processing Antigen-presenting cells at the injection site process each of the six antigens separately and present them to T-helper cells, initiating six parallel adaptive immune responses.
3
Antibody and Memory Cell Production B-cells produce specific antibodies against diphtheria and tetanus toxins, pertussis antigens, Hepatitis B surface antigen, poliovirus types 1-3, and Hib polysaccharide, while memory cells are formed for long-term protection.
4
Booster Reinforces Long-Term Immunity The 15โ€“18 month booster dose significantly boosts antibody titres across all six components, providing durable protection through early childhood.
โœ… Hexaxim contains no live organisms โ€“ it cannot cause diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hepatitis B, polio or Hib disease.

โš ๏ธ Hexaxim Side Effects

As with any combination vaccine, mild reactions are common and expected as the immune system responds to six antigens at once. Serious reactions are rare.

๐Ÿšซ Precautions & Contraindications

Do Not Take If:

  • Anaphylaxis or severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of this vaccine, or to any of its components (including neomycin or glutaraldehyde traces)
  • Encephalopathy of unknown cause within 7 days of a previous dose of a pertussis-containing vaccine
  • Moderate to severe acute febrile illness โ€“ defer vaccination until full recovery (mild illness without fever is NOT a contraindication)

Use with Caution โ€“ Consult Doctor First:

  • History of febrile seizures or family history of seizure disorders
  • Bleeding disorders or thrombocytopenia (IM injection requires caution)
  • Progressive neurological conditions โ€“ discuss timing with your pediatrician
  • Hypotonic-hyporesponsive episode after a previous dose of a pertussis-containing vaccine
โ„น๏ธ Hexavalent vs Pentavalent: Hexaxim is a 6-in-1 (hexavalent) vaccine that adds Hepatitis B protection to the standard 5-in-1 (pentavalent) DTaP-IPV-Hib combination. If your baby already received a separate birth-dose or catch-up Hepatitis B vaccine, discuss with your pediatrician whether hexavalent or pentavalent is more suitable for the remaining doses.
