RABIVAX-S is a Purified Chick Embryo Cell Vaccine (PCECV) for rabies, manufactured by Serum Institute of India, one of the world’s largest vaccine manufacturers. It is used for both pre-exposure prophylaxis (before potential exposure, e.g. travellers, vets, animal handlers) and post-exposure treatment (after an animal bite, scratch or lick on broken skin/mucosa) — rabies is nearly 100% fatal once symptoms appear, making prompt vaccination after any suspicious animal contact essential. Available at VacciHub at ₹900 per dose with home vaccination across Delhi NCR by certified nurses with end-to-end cold chain guarantee.

What Does RABIVAX-S Protect Against?

🦠

Rabies (Bite-Transmitted)

A viral disease affecting the nervous system, transmitted through the bite, scratch or saliva contact of an infected animal (commonly dogs) on broken skin or mucous membranes.

🚨

Post-Exposure Progression

Once symptoms of rabies appear, the disease is almost universally fatal. Prompt wound care and vaccination immediately after exposure prevents the virus from reaching the nervous system.

✈️

Pre-Exposure Risk

Travellers to rabies-endemic areas, veterinarians, animal handlers and laboratory workers face ongoing risk and benefit from pre-exposure immunity.

🐶

Occupational & Community Exposure

Stray dog and animal bites are a leading cause of rabies exposure in India; RABIVAX-S offers reliable, WHO-prequalified protection for both children and adults.

Who Should Get RABIVAX-S?

🤕

Animal Bite / Scratch Victims

Anyone bitten, scratched or licked on broken skin or mucosa by a dog, cat, monkey or other mammal, regardless of the animal’s vaccination status.

👩‍⚕️

Vets & Animal Handlers

Veterinarians, animal control staff, wildlife workers and pet handlers who face repeated occupational exposure risk.

🌍

Travellers to Endemic Areas

Travellers to regions with limited access to medical care and higher rabies prevalence, especially for extended stays or rural travel.

🧪

Laboratory Workers

Staff handling rabies virus or infected animal samples in research and diagnostic laboratories.

Previously Pre-Vaccinated2 DosesDay 0 and Day 3 onlyRabies immunoglobulin is NOT required if prior full course completed
For Category III bites (bleeding wounds, or licks on broken skin/mucosa), rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) is recommended in addition to the vaccine series — your VacciHub nurse or doctor will assess the bite category.

How Is RABIVAX-S Given?

1

Immediate Wound Washing

The bite/scratch wound is thoroughly washed with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes before vaccination – this alone significantly reduces infection risk.

2

Site Preparation

The upper arm (deltoid muscle) or anterolateral thigh in young children is cleaned with an antiseptic swab before the injection is given.

3

Intramuscular or Intradermal Injection

The reconstituted dose is injected into the deltoid muscle (IM) or as a low-dose intradermal (ID) injection, as prescribed by the treating doctor.

4

Post-Injection Observation

You are observed for 15–20 minutes after each dose to monitor for any immediate reaction, and reminded of the next due date.

Possible Side Effects

Common (Mild)
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, mild fever, headache, dizziness or muscle aches for 1–2 days after the dose.
Rare
Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis), hives, or a Guillain-Barré-type reaction — extremely rare and should be reported immediately.

Precautions & Contraindications

RABIVAX-S should be used with caution or under medical supervision in:

  • A history of severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of this or a similar rabies vaccine
  • Immunosuppressed individuals (may require additional doses and antibody titre testing)
  • Those currently taking antimalarial drugs (chloroquine may reduce the immune response to intradermal dosing)
  • Acute moderate-to-severe illness (vaccination may be deferred except in confirmed rabies exposure, where it should never be delayed)
Rabies exposure is a medical emergency — vaccination should never be delayed while awaiting test results on the biting animal. For Category III bites, rabies immunoglobulin (RIG) must be administered alongside the vaccine series.

Frequently Asked Questions

RABIVAX-S is a Purified Chick Embryo Cell rabies vaccine (PCECV) manufactured by Serum Institute of India, given for both pre-exposure and post-exposure protection against rabies.
RABIVAX-S is priced at ₹900 per dose, with nurse home-visit fees applying separately based on your pincode.
The injection is similar to any routine IM vaccine. Post-exposure treatment typically needs 4–5 doses over about a month (Essen or Zagreb regimen); pre-exposure prevention needs only 3 doses.
Pre-exposure vaccination (3 doses) is given before any bite to build baseline immunity for travellers, vets and animal handlers. Post-exposure vaccination (4–5 doses) is given after a bite or scratch and is the standard emergency treatment.
RIG is recommended in addition to RABIVAX-S for Category III bites — bleeding wounds or licks on broken skin/mucous membranes. Your VacciHub nurse or doctor will assess your bite category and advise.
Yes. Since rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms begin, RABIVAX-S can and should be given to pregnant women, infants and children after a genuine exposure, as the benefit far outweighs any risk.
