T.D.VAC is a Tetanus and Diphtheria (Td) adsorbed vaccine manufactured by Serum Institute of India, containing purified Diphtheria and Tetanus toxoids adsorbed onto an aluminium phosphate adjuvant. It replaces the older TT (Tetanus Toxoid) vaccine by adding diphtheria protection, and is recommended as a routine 10-year booster for adolescents and adults, during pregnancy, and after tetanus-prone injuries.

What Diseases Does T.D.VAC Protect Against?

🧠

Tetanus (Lockjaw)

A bacterial toxin-mediated disease causing severe, painful muscle stiffness and spasms, entering the body through cuts, wounds, or burns contaminated with soil or rust.

🫡

Diphtheria

A serious throat and respiratory infection caused by toxin-producing bacteria that can lead to breathing difficulty, heart damage, and can be fatal if untreated.

🤰

Maternal & Neonatal Tetanus

Vaccination during pregnancy protects both mother and newborn from tetanus during and after delivery.

🔪

Wound-Related Tetanus

Deep or dirty wounds carry a high risk of tetanus infection; a timely Td booster after injury significantly reduces this risk.

Who Should Get T.D.VAC?

🧒

Adolescents (10 & 16 Years)

Recommended as the DPT booster replacement at 10 and 16 years of age per the Indian National Immunization Schedule.

🤰

Pregnant Women

Every pregnancy requires Td vaccination to protect the mother and prevent neonatal tetanus in the newborn.

🧑

Adults Needing a 10-Year Booster

Adults who have not received a Td booster in the last 10 years, especially those in high-exposure occupations.

🩹

Wound & Injury Care

Anyone with a tetanus-prone wound and no clear recent booster history, as advised by a treating doctor.

How Is T.D.VAC Given?

1

Site Preparation

The upper arm (deltoid muscle) is cleaned with an antiseptic swab before the injection is given.

2

Intramuscular Injection

0.5 mL is injected into the deltoid muscle using a sterile needle and syringe – not to be given intravenously.

3

Single Dose Administration

T.D.VAC is given as one complete 0.5 mL dose per visit, not divided across multiple sittings.

4

Post-Injection Observation

The recipient is observed for 15–20 minutes after the injection to watch for any immediate allergic reaction.

Possible Side Effects of T.D.VAC

Common (Mild)
Pain, redness or swelling at the injection site, mild fever, tiredness or a headache for 1–2 days after the dose.
Rare
Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) or an exaggerated local (Arthus-type) reaction, most often seen with excessively frequent booster doses.

Precautions & Contraindications

Do NOT give T.D.VAC if the person has:

  • A history of severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of Td, DPT or any vaccine component
  • A history of encephalopathy within 7 days of a previous dose of a similar vaccine, with no other identifiable cause
  • An acute moderate-to-severe illness with or without fever (vaccination should be postponed, not cancelled)
  • A history of Guillain-Barré syndrome within 6 weeks of a previous tetanus-toxoid-containing vaccine (seek doctor's advice)
⚠️ Always inform the vaccinating nurse or doctor about any previous vaccine reactions, current illness, pregnancy, or allergies before the dose is given.
