👥 Who Should Get TUBERVAC (BCG)?
Newborns – Birth Dose
Ideally given within the first few days of life, before hospital discharge, as the birth dose under India's Universal Immunization Programme (UIP).
Infants Up To 1 Year
If the birth dose was missed, BCG can be given any time up to one year of age without needing a prior tuberculin test.
Children After 1 Year
Many pediatricians recommend a tuberculin (Mantoux) test before BCG in children older than 12 months who missed their dose. Discuss with your doctor.
Infants in TB-Affected Households
Newborns in households with a known TB case should still receive the birth dose as advised by their pediatrician, alongside any recommended prophylaxis.

TUBERVAC must be used immediately after reconstitution and any unused portion discarded, as per the manufacturer's instructions. It must be stored in the dark between 2–8°C at all times — including after reconstitution — since BCG is sensitive to light.

⚠️ TUBERVAC (BCG) Side Effects
Normal / Expected Reaction
A small red papule usually appears at the injection site within 2–6 weeks, which may progress to a small ulcer and heal over 6–12 weeks, leaving a tiny permanent scar. Mild swelling of nearby lymph nodes (usually in the armpit) can also occur and is normal, and usually needs no treatment.
Uncommon / Rare
Larger abscess formation, keloid scarring, a non-healing ulcer beyond 12 weeks, or significant lymph node swelling/suppuration (BCG lymphadenitis) should be reviewed by a doctor. Disseminated BCG infection is very rare and occurs almost exclusively in infants with severe, undiagnosed immunodeficiency.
Do not apply any ointment, bandage or dressing to the injection site scar unless specifically advised by your doctor, and do not squeeze or attempt to drain the nodule.

The infant has symptomatic HIV infection or another known immunodeficiency, an acute febrile illness, generalized skin disease, or is an unwell/unstable newborn.
