Typbar TCV is the world's first WHO-prequalified Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine by Bharat Biotech International Limited. It protects against typhoid fever caused by Salmonella typhi by conjugating the Vi capsular polysaccharide to Tetanus Toxoid — generating T-cell-dependent immunological memory from as young as 6 months of age. Unlike older polysaccharide typhoid vaccines, Typbar TCV provides longer-lasting, stronger protection with a single dose. India is one of the highest typhoid-burden countries in the world — making this vaccine critical for all age groups.

WHO Prequalified – World's First Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine
Typbar TCV received WHO prequalification in 2017 — the first typhoid conjugate vaccine globally to achieve this. Recommended by WHO for national immunisation programmes in typhoid-endemic countries including India. Endorsed by GAVI and included in India's Universal Immunisation Programme rollout.
A systemic bacterial infection caused by Salmonella typhi. Spreads through contaminated food and water. Causes high prolonged fever, headache, abdominal pain, diarrhoea or constipation, rose spots. Can be fatal if untreated.
🇮🇳
India's Burden
India accounts for an estimated 4–6 million typhoid cases per year — one of the highest globally. Children aged 2–15 are most at risk. Urban slums, travel to rural areas and poor sanitation increase risk dramatically.
💊
Antibiotic Resistance (XDR)
Extensively Drug-Resistant (XDR) typhoid strains resistant to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, cotrimoxazole, fluoroquinolones and third-generation cephalosporins are emerging — making vaccination the most reliable prevention strategy.
💉
Why TCV is Superior
Conjugate vaccines generate T-cell memory — providing longer-lasting protection from 6 months of age. WHO recommends TCV over older polysaccharide vaccines for all endemic countries as the preferred typhoid immunisation strategy.
👥 Who Should Get Typbar TCV?
👶
Infants (6 Months+)
Typbar TCV can be given from 6 months of age — a major advantage over older typhoid vaccines. IAP recommends at 9–12 months as part of the extended immunisation schedule.
👧👦
Children (1–15 Years)
Children are the highest-risk group for typhoid in India. TCV provides superior, longer-lasting protection vs older vaccines. Booster at 2 years if given before age 2.
✈️
International Travellers
Travel to South Asia, Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa or any typhoid-endemic region. Essential pre-travel vaccination — especially for travellers to areas with poor sanitation.
👨💼
Adults in High-Risk Areas
Adults in Delhi NCR, Ghaziabad, Noida and other high-density urban areas with contaminated water supply risk. Food handlers, healthcare workers and sanitation workers.
🔬
Lab & Healthcare Workers
Persons working with Salmonella typhi in research or diagnostic labs. Typhoid vaccination is an occupational health requirement in microbiology facilities.
🏥
Immunocompromised Patients
HIV-positive individuals, transplant recipients and others on immunosuppressive therapy have higher typhoid risk. Consult your doctor — TCV may be given with appropriate caution.

⚙️ How Does Typbar TCV Work?
1
Vi-Tetanus Toxoid Conjugate Injected
The 0.5 mL prefilled syringe delivers purified Vi capsular polysaccharide (25 µg) covalently conjugated to Tetanus Toxoid (25 µg). Administered intramuscularly — deltoid in older children/adults, anterolateral thigh in infants.
2
T-Cell Activation via Tetanus Toxoid Carrier
The Tetanus Toxoid carrier recruits T-helper cells (CD4+), converting the immune response from T-independent (as in plain polysaccharide vaccines) to T-dependent. This is the critical conjugate advantage — without T-cell help, no immunological memory is created.
3
Anti-Vi IgG Antibodies + Memory Cells Generated
The immune system generates high-titre IgG antibodies against the Vi capsular polysaccharide of S. typhi. These antibodies coat the bacteria and facilitate opsonophagocytosis. Memory B and T-cells enable rapid response on re-exposure.
4
Protection From 6 Months — Lasting Years
Protection develops within 2 weeks. Clinical trials show efficacy of 81.6% against typhoid. Immunity lasts significantly longer than plain polysaccharide vaccines — recommended repeat every 3 years in high-risk settings rather than the 3-yearly requirement for older vaccines.
✅ Clinical evidence: Typbar TCV demonstrated 81.6% vaccine efficacy in a Phase 3 controlled human infection study — the highest efficacy ever demonstrated for a typhoid vaccine in a challenge model. Published in The Lancet (2017).
⚠️ Typbar TCV Side Effects

🚫 Precautions & Contraindications
Do NOT give Typbar TCV if:
Known hypersensitivity to any vaccine component including Tetanus Toxoid
Severe allergic reaction to a prior Typbar TCV or TCV dose
Acute moderate-to-severe febrile illness on vaccination day — defer until recovery
Use with Caution:
Immunosuppressed individuals — immune response may be reduced; still recommended
Pregnancy — limited data; benefit generally outweighs risk, especially for travel; consult doctor
If a Tetanus Toxoid-containing vaccine was given recently — discuss timing with doctor
Thrombocytopenia or coagulation disorders — injection site bleeding risk
⚠️ Do NOT freeze. Freezing destroys the vaccine's efficacy. Always verify the VVM (Vaccine Vial Monitor) indicator before use. VacciHub nurses carry vaccines in validated cold boxes and check VVM status before every administration.

After the primary dose at 9–12 months and booster at 2 years, subsequent doses are recommended every 3 years for persons in high-risk areas or with occupational/travel exposure. For one-time travellers to endemic regions, a single dose before travel provides adequate short-term protection.
Common side effects are mild: injection-site pain, redness, swelling, low-grade fever and irritability in infants — all resolving within 1–3 days. Typbar TCV has no aluminium adjuvant and no preservatives, contributing to its excellent tolerability. Serious adverse events are extremely rare. Observe the recipient for 30 minutes post-vaccination — our VacciHub nurses follow this protocol.
