ZYVAC TCV · Zydus Lifesciences · 0.5 mL Single Dose · Intramuscular Injection
Composition · Storage 2-8°C · Zydus Lifesciences
India accounts for millions of typhoid cases annually. Caused by Salmonella typhi, spread via contaminated food and water, causing prolonged high fever, headache and abdominal pain that can be serious if untreated.
Drug-resistant and XDR strains of typhoid are increasingly reported in South Asia, making prevention through vaccination an important strategy alongside safe food and water practices.
Plain Vi polysaccharide vaccines generate no memory and are ineffective under 2 years. TCV conjugates Vi to Tetanus Toxoid, engaging T-helper cells for lasting memory and protection from 6 months of age.
Zydus Lifesciences is one of India's largest pharmaceutical companies with WHO-approved manufacturing standards, producing ZYVAC TCV under stringent GMP quality control.
ZYVAC TCV can be given from 6 months of age, allowing early protection during a high-risk window not covered by older typhoid vaccines. IAP recommends 9-12 months for routine dosing.
Children are among the highest-risk groups for typhoid infection in India and benefit from the longer-lasting protection offered by conjugate vaccines.
Recommended before travel to South Asia, Southeast Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa or any region with poor sanitation and known typhoid risk. Book at least 2 weeks before travel.
Adults living in dense urban areas with variable water quality, food handlers and sanitation workers may benefit from vaccination or revaccination every 3 years.
People with reduced immunity may still be considered for vaccination after consulting their doctor, as ZYVAC TCV does not contain a live organism.
As per Zydus Lifesciences manufacturer label. Each 0.5 mL prefilled syringe contains:
| Component | Quantity | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Purified Vi-capsular Polysaccharide of Salmonella typhi | 25 µg | Active antigen – induces protective antibodies |
| Tetanus Toxoid (Carrier Protein, conjugated) | 16 to 50 µg | Enables T-cell-dependent immune response and memory |
| 2-Phenoxyethanol | 2.50 mg | Preservative – maintains sterility in PFS |
| Isotonic buffer solution | q.s. to 0.5 mL | Vehicle – maintains pH and tonicity |
| Group | Dose | Timing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Infants (routine) | 1 Dose | 9–12 months | IAP extended schedule, often alongside MMR/MR |
| Booster (if 1st dose <2 yrs) | Booster | 2 years of age | Recommended if primary dose given before 2nd birthday |
| Children 2–15 years (catch-up) | 1 Dose | Any time | Single dose; repeat roughly every 3 years in high-exposure settings |
| Adults | 1 Dose | Any time | Repeat roughly every 3 years if continued risk (travel, occupation) |
| Pre-travel | 1 Dose | ≥2 weeks before travel | Recommended for travel to typhoid-endemic regions |
ZYVAC TCV is well-tolerated across all age groups. Side effects are mostly mild and transient.
Injection-site pain or tenderness · Redness or mild swelling · Low-grade fever · Irritability in infants · Mild fatigue
