👥 Who Should Get HILLCHOL?

Cholera spreads through contaminated water and food, and can cause severe dehydration within hours. HILLCHOL is recommended for:

  • Travelers heading to cholera-endemic countries or regions with active outbreaks in Africa, South Asia and parts of Latin America.
  • Individuals living in or moving into flood-affected, low-sanitation or refugee/relief-camp settings where clean water access is uncertain.
  • Food handlers, healthcare and sanitation workers, and disaster-relief personnel working in high-risk environments.
  • Household members and close contacts during a confirmed local cholera outbreak, as advised by public health authorities.
  • Individuals aged 1 year and above seeking a needle-free, single-dose option for cholera prevention ahead of travel or seasonal outbreak risk (monsoon/flood season).

📅 HILLCHOL Vaccination Schedule

Regimen / GroupNumber of DosesTimingNotes
STANDARD PROTECTION
Primary Dose (Oral) 1 Dose Single 1.5 mL oral dose, ideally at least 1–2 weeks before travel or anticipated exposure No injection; respule contents poured directly into the mouth under supervision
CONTINUED / REPEATED RISK
Booster Dose As advised Per physician's advice for individuals with ongoing or repeated cholera exposure risk Duration of protection after a single dose is being studied; follow your doctor's guidance for repeat travel/outbreak exposure

Schedule reflects HILLCHOL's single-dose design. Always confirm timing with your physician, especially close to travel dates or during an active local outbreak.

⚙️ How Does HILLCHOL Work?

1
Oral Antigen Delivery The 1.5 mL respule is poured directly into the recipient's mouth and swallowed – no needle, injection or cold-chain syringe is involved. The inactivated whole-cell antigen travels to the gut.
2
Mucosal Immune Recognition Gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) encounters the killed V. cholerae O1 antigens and lipopolysaccharide (LPS), activating local immune cells without any risk of causing cholera, since the bacteria are fully inactivated.
3
Antibody & Memory Cell Formation The immune system produces intestinal IgA and systemic antibodies directed against V. cholerae O1 surface antigens, along with immune memory cells for faster response on future exposure.
4
Protection at the Gut Lining On future exposure to toxigenic V. cholerae O1 through contaminated food or water, primed antibodies help block bacterial attachment and toxin activity at the intestinal lining, reducing the risk of severe watery diarrhoea.
